The celebrated violinist Zanta Hofmeyr will perform with duo partner Malcolm Nay on Sunday 23 November at 16:00 in Unisa’s Enoch Sontonga Hall.

The programme consists of three sonatas: Sonata no 2 by Jean-Marie Leclair, Beethoven’s Sonata no 7 and Richard Strauss’ monumental Sonata for Violin and Piano.

Zanta Hofmeyr graduated from The Juilliard School of Music where she was a student of Dorothy Delay and Hyo Kang. After her New York debut in Carnegie Recital Hall (now Weil recital hall), she returned to South Africa in 1985.

A recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, her most recent awards include a nomination as best female artist at the KKNK arts festival as well as a SAMA nomination for her CD “Cantilena”. Other awards include Woman of the Year (Rapport/City Press), Afrikoon (ATKV) and a “Zanta Hofmeyr” rose from Ludwig Tassner.

Malcolm Nay is regarded as one of the finest concert pianists in South Africa. He performs in several established Chamber Ensembles and accompanies many international visiting soloists.

After graduating with a BMus from the University of the Witwatersrand under the tutelage of Pauline Nossel, he travelled on scholarships to America where he furthered his studies under the Hungarian concert pianist, Béla Siki.

He is especially remembered for his performances of the Mozart Concertos, several of which he conducted from the keyboard. He maintains a busy solo schedule and is currently Associate Professor of Music at the Wits School of the Arts.

The duo has performed together for many years. From their extensive recital repertoire their performances of the ten Beethoven violin sonatas, the Brahms, Prokofiev and Grieg sonatas, stand out as particular highlights. In 2009 they gave the first performance of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s first sonata for violin and piano.

Zanta currently teaches at the Universities of Pretoria and the Witwatersrand. She often acts as string coach for youth orchestras and has been on the faculty of the International Chamber Music Festival at the University of Stellenbosch .

Her recordings include “Zanta Hofmeyr plays Arioso” with organist Wim Viljoen and with pianist Malcolm Nay the album “Romantic Violin”.

In 2009 she released “Cantilena” – a second collaboration with Wim Viljoen. In 2011 a new CD Beethoven Tango was released in which she and pianist Charl du Plessis perform works by Piazzolla, Sting and Jazz standards.

The hall is located on Unisa’s Sunnyside Campus. Tickets are available at the door for R95 (adults) and R75 (students and pensioners).
